White Noise on Black Background

Afro-Peruvian music, also known as Música Negra, is a popular genre of Peruvian music that was developed by black slaves brought from West Africa by Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century. Over the following centuries, Afro-Peruvians found ways of merging their African musical traditions with Spanish music, creating a musical language that is particularly rich in rhythm and harmony.

Despite these advancements, the Afro-Peruvian music movement in Peru is less visible than other Peruvian music genres, and even less visible internationally when compared to Afro-descendant counterparts in Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.
