José Vásquez Montero (1961 - 2014), better known as Pepe Vásquez was an Afro-Peruvian singer-songwriter. He is considered one of the most important representatives of Afro-Peruvian music and música criolla. Vásquez achieved success in the Peruvian folklore scene during the 1980s with songs that remain popular to this day (Ministerio de Cultura, 2014). Vásquez was the son of Porfirio Vásquez, who was key figure in the reconstruction of Afro-Peruvian music in the 50s.
